Hello, my name is Alison Childers, and the first thing you should know about me is I am a nerd. Like a really big nerd. If you keep that in mind, the rest of this description is just icing on the cake.
I am a fourth year (almost fifth year now!) 9-12 math teacher in the small town of Carmi, Illinois. I teach Algebra 1 and Pre-Calculus, and spend most of my evenings on Twitter, Pinterest, etc. trying to find new ways to keep students excited to be in math class. I am interested in finding activities/projects that push students’ math knowledge, while also working on their collaboration, computer, and real-world problem solving skills. I also coach our math team and color guard.
Next year is a big year for us, as we are going to move 1:1 chromebooks. I am undaunted by integrating technology, but having them at our fingertips every hour of every day next year means I want to find the best ways to streamline workflow and to use the technology to its fullest potential.
Next year we are also going to try to incorporate a “space” theme for our entire math department, and I couldn’t be more excited! I am a self-proclaimed space/Star Wars nerd, so this is the perfect theme for me to get excited about! This summer the math department made up of 3 teachers will be meeting to design activities and projects that will not only tie together Math, History, and Science, but we also want the different math classes happening throughout the day to be able to co-op on projects.
The purpose of this blog will be to detail our journey into all of these exciting areas, and I can’t wait to get started on all of it! Hopefully at the other end of next school year, I will be the best version of myself so far!
P.S. I was a LearnZillion Content Creator in 2014, 2015, and now I will be again in 2017! I also just heard that I will be a LearnZillion Ambassador for the next year! Woo! I have also just finished my Google Level 1 and 2 Certifications.
